I’ve been an avid reader for as long as I can remember, but my love for writing took off thanks to my mom and my 6th-grade teacher when I wrote an essay on Leonardo da Vinci. Not only was I intrigued by all the areas in which da Vinci excelled, but I also learned that writing about a topic that you loved was one of the keys to success.
Thanks to my dad for lending me his camera; the da Vinci essay also included photographs. After years of teaching me how to draw, my mom’s lessons were also included in the essay.
That led me to the realization that writing could include images.
In 2nd grade, I was taught how to play the piano and read and write music by a teacher with infinite patience. You guessed it: da Vinci inspired me to write one of my first songs.
To tie it all together, I had been experimenting with stop-motion filmmaking using my dad’s 8mm movie camera. Da Vinci was my second 5-minute film, which was a big step forward compared with my first film, Ollie the Octopus and Space Station Alpha.
